Hey everybody, I am new to this site. I am in the market for a .270 rifle bolt action. I have been looking seriously at some made by savage firearms. I am a college student and looking for a good, affordable rifle to take to range and hunt some hogs and deer. From what I have read, a lot of people like the savage made guns. They seem to be what I'm looking for. Any suggestions, comments, advice, or anything will help. Thanks!
Also, what are some other manufactures that rival savage on price and reliability?

Well savage is a good rifle and it seems like everyone is shooting them now adays I'm not crazy about the accu-trigger. That maybe just me. I have a browning a-bolt in a .270 and I love it. My best group with it is 3 inch group at 500 yards. I believe they are just alittle more than savage. Tikka is another favorite of mine and most of my friends. I'm not crazy on Ruger or Remington but they are both great guns as well. The .270 is a great caliber for the average hunter.

When I graduated high school I bought a savage model III and my folks bought me a leupold scope for it. I love the .270 (had an old Winchester with a post scope) but could never ever get the savage shooting how I wanted it to shoot. I just recently traded it in.

    rifle in 270

You also mention range shooting -- do compare the cost of 308 vs 270 ammo -- you can put a lot more 308 down range for the same cost. And quality ammo in either caliber will handle the kind of hunting you plan...

Look at the marlin x7 in 270, its very well built, has an adjudtable trigger the fit is great an the are tack drivers every bit as good as a savage. Plus they are 320$ so it will fit in well with any budget.

I am a Savage fan and don`t think you can go wrong with a Savage. That said, most of the gun on the market will do what you want. Take a little time and check out the used market in your area and you may find a bargin.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to a gun show in town next weekend and going to see what I can find. And I'm going to try and go to more local venders. Thanks again
