12ga shotgun. Ar15 in 556 or 45acp of some sort if you need a handgun. I dont think glock makes a 357magnum.

Judge ( revolver shoots .410 or 45LC) perfect for home defense.

Glock does not make a 357 Magnum but does make the model 32 in 357 SIG which I have and love. I also have and enjoy the DE in 50 AE. While it's a fun gun and good to hunt with, it is not a good home defense gun. Get a 20 or 12 gauge shotgun load it with buck shot and call it a day. If you really want a handgun, get the Glock and use frangible loads for less penetration through walls and or the BG.

I was under the impression that the Glock 31 can handle 357 Magnum ammo?

    Am I mistaken?

Anyways I just looked into the 357 SIG velocity capabilities and it seems like 357 SIG special application bullets are better than 357 Magnums. It has a velocity of 2,500 ft/s. That's plenty of stopping power, ain't it?

357 sig for the glocks, not magnum to my knowledge and yes, plenty of stopping power, good enough for many cops. As far as being "better"...that's all about opinion...imho

According to wikipedia, 357 mag has a velocity of 1,500 ft/s and 357 sig special application has 2,500 ft/s.

It's all about velocity and kinetic energy in the end, no?

    *EDIT*

Alright apparently it is about Velocity x Mass. And Deagles produce 2,200 Joules of energy, which is higher than 357 sig

Well, no, not if you're talking about home defense/short range shots, magnum, sig, makes no difference, either one will ruin the BG's day in short order. To answer the original question, the best gun for HD is the one you shoot most accurately...been said many times before but bears repeating, a hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .45. Caliber, for the most part, is a matter of personal preference, some people despise 9mm, some swear by 'em, it's what's best for you that matters most. If you're talking strictly HD you also need to worry about over penetration, what or who is behind the wall/door, do you live in a house or apt, alone or married with kids. I think stuff like that should be your first concern, not fps...again...IMHO

Depends on bullet weight. The 357 Magnum that has the best "street record" is the 125 grain HP. The 357 SIG uses a 124 or 125 grain HP at about the same velocities (from a 4" barrel about 1375fps. for the Sig and 1400fps. for the magnum) and they perform very similarly. As bullet weights go up, the magnum has the advantage.

The model 31 Glock is a 357 SIG. In the firearms world, energy is not measured by Joules it is measured by Ft. lbs. And no it's not all about energy though that is importand to an extent. It's a lot more about shot placement. Soot someone in an arm with the 50AE and he will be in a world of hurt but can still kill you. Put one 357 in his heart or brain and he will cease and desist a lot quicker. The .50 AE was never intended to be a self defense firearm. Recovery from recoil as well as a huge muzzle blast makes it far from practicle. Over penetration is a major concern also.

Vincent and Jeepejeep said it best. Like Wyatt Earp said, "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything". It's mostly about shot placement and personal preference. However in extrme curcumstances such as being attacked by a bear or something then the cartridge is also an important factor.

Glock has the G31 and G32 and they are ".357sig only" i carried my personal G31 as a deputy for 5 years and loved it..i still have it and still love it, it is well suited for duty, home defense, or CC.. Would be a great choice

What is the possibility that the bad guy is wearing body armor?

The .50ae DEagle is essentially a big 'ole fat wad of gun bling. It'd be an ideal choice for "Mr. T".

If it's all about home defense, buy a shotgun. If you prefer a HD handgun, buy a 357mag (revolver), 9mm, 45acp, 40sw, or 357sig. The G31 is a fine choice if you like Glocks. Just know that the 357sig is an expensive platform to learn on. It'll run you $20/box for range ammo, vs $10/box for 9mm. And 9mm is a very capable home defense choice.

Yeah a $10 difference is not really an issue.

Probably slim to none but then again, it's tough for me to think like a scumbag burgular so I really can't say for sure...perfect reason for you to practice headshots.

As one who routinely leaves 250rds at the range on a weekly basis...$10/box is $50 a week, $2500 a year. And there are 9mm defense rounds that'll come darn close to 357sig ballistics. Winchester's 127gr +p+ Ranger comes to mind (1250+fps).

Good point. If the BG is wearing armor and you hit them in the chest twice you are gonna distract them long enough to to put one through his brain box.
