    I've never had one crack.
Redding will probably ask you to send it to them, and send you a new one. They make quality stuff, and usually stand behind their products.

was it ever dropped on a hard surface??

ive seen steel tool dies shatter like glass falling off a table onto a concrete floor.

It has never been dropped, or abused in any way.. It will be interesting to find out what happened though... if it was just metal fatigue or ????

It sounds like the die itself could have been either over hardened, or else not tempered, or tempered improperly. You didn't mention the caliber? In full length resizing dies in many of the Magnum rifle chamberings, fired brass can and does exert a great deal of expansive force against the sides of the die. Especially at or near the base. While this should not force the die to crack, it could if the die was overly hardened causing crystallizing of the metallic grain of the steel itself, thereby making the steel very brittle. Hardness prevents wear. But as the old saying goes, you don't get something for nothing. The downside is the material becomes more brittle the harder it gets.

Ok, finally got pictures taken, and the die is on its way back to Redding along with 5 fired brass at their request.

Here is the picture of the die as promised.

    Redding will replace it..

I have loaded for right at 40 years, and I have not seen that happen.

When it happens to a quality made (Redding) die, that just goes to show that it can happen to any brand.

Redding, like most Co's are top notch+will get you back to reloading..Bill.:D

One email... and they took care of it. Asked for 5 fired brass, so they could polish the new sizing die to my brass specs....

I can not wait to get it back.... My Oly Arms AR is slowly eating thru what ammo I had, for coyotes...

Have NEVER seen that. That is like dropping a bowling ball, and having it shatter.

Just does not happen! Glad the maker is standing behind their stuff- good to see.

You definitely got the odd one out.
FWIW, I'd be shocked if Redding didn't hook you up.

So I sent the die in...

So I have a question for you regarding the chamber on the .243 wssm.

Redding just called me. The back of the chamber according to the fired brass I sent them is .007 over SAAMI specs. They are worried about case head separation, and other things.

They are going to polish a die to that chambers specs but it will kill any and all warranty on the die.

Is this typical with an WSSM? Or an AR??? Or is Redding just blowing smoke up my ass? This rifle has less than 1000 rounds through it...
