The Cowboy Action Shooting club I shoot with had their annual benefit shoot for the battered women’s shelter this past weekend.

The shoot was Cowboys versus Law Enforcement and was composed of 6 stages. Three were designed by Cowboys and three were designed by Law Enforcement. Each were required to abide by their own rules so it was a bit intimidating to go against semi-autos, AR 15’s and semi-automatic shotguns with colt single actions, a lever action rifle and a double barreled coach gun. I finished 57 out of 70 but don’t consider it that bad a finish as I’ve only been shooting CAS for 5 months now. I only had one problem on one stage when a casing stuck in the chamber of my rifle and the extractor rode over the casing and double fed, I carry a small screwdriver in a ammo loop of my rig so I picked the case out and keep on going, it just cost me a whole lot of time.

All in all fun was had by all and I think the highlight of my day was after I finished a Law Enforcement stage that had 14…. That’s right count them 14 shotgun targets and two LEO’s came up and said they were impressed as they had no idea we (Cowboys) could shoot and reload as fast as we did with those coach guns. They said I really burned through the stage.

Here are a couple of pictures from the shoot. In the second picture are 6 pepper poppers that you have to knock down with the shotgun, BUT, if you notice two of those poppers have a dark base and stand higher then the others. Those are throwers, this means when you shoot them when they fall they throw a charcoal briquette up in the air and you have to hit it with a follow on shot. How high it goes depends on how solid you hit the popper. Photo 3 is after it was tossed.

    Enjoy, I sure did.
