Yesterday, Sunday, I popped into my local QFC looking for empty boxes because I'm helping my mother move into assisted living.

The produce clerk was kind enough to escort me toward the stock room to check but as we rounded an aisle, a rather "rotund" young woman, I'd say 30 or so...says is a very snarky voice...

"Excuse me sir, but I find your hat to be in VERY poor taste given what just happened in Colorado!"

Honestly, I was stunned for a moment by her vitriol as I realized I'd grabbed my gun club hat which happens to have a large bolt action rifle emblazoned across the front.

As those of you who know me can imagine, I recovered quickly and replied...

"Sweetheart, given your waistline, I'd be more worried about that cart full of Ding Dongs than anything I'm wearing". ;)

The poor clerk could not help himself and was in tears by the time we reached the stockroom...:D

I know, I know, I should have been prepared to calmly and professionally explain the flaws in her emotional logic but I ask...is there really any value in arguing with idiots? Or is our energy better spent entertaining a fence sitter at an idiots expense?

    Thoughts?

    Tack

I learned long ago that arguing with an idiot is a useless effort. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Personally I thought your answer was perfect.

    Thanks John...

As the clerk and I came back up front with arm loads of boxes she was speaking LOUDLY with the manager and gesturing quite dramatically...

I think the part that surprised me the most was the location. I was in QFC for gods sake. I though people like her all shopped at Wal Mart?

It wasn't much of an argument...more of a verbal slap down with her standing there mouth agape while the clerk and I continued to the stockroom...him trying to contain his laughter until we got through the doors.

I don't think we even broke our stride...;)

Well done Tack! But man you could have went somewhere with that. You should have went on the offense and informed here that those ding dongs were just as deadly to her health as anything in the world and told her you were spearheading a group to restrict the sale of such things with the hopes they'd be completely outlawed someday.

Tack, you did really well. Arguing with an idiot is like wrestling a big hog; you get covered with crap and mud and the hog loves it.

I think that fabulous, nothing better than not having to say "I wish Id thought to say that". She had it coming and it would have been a shame to let her walk away feeling proud of her righteous indignation.

Thats exactly why you cannot negotiate with these sea slugs, where do you even begin? Great work, maybe she will think twice the next time she opens her mouth to choke up anything but a bucket of extra crispy.

Good for you! A quick comeback is what was needed and you nailed it. Don't waste your time trying to reason with an idiot. If idiots could be reasoned with, they wouldn't be idiots.

Thanks fellas, I usually err on the "gentleman" side whenever I'm dealing with ladies but everything about this woman rubbed me the wrong way.

It's a good thing she was 10 years my junior instead of the other way around. The old "respect your elders" thing was slapped into me so hard that had she been 50...I probably would have stuttered out a very polite "yes mam".

You can usually cure antis with one range trip, letting them shoot

    your .22LRs.

Of course, they still act like it was all their original, PC idea,

    but they're no longer antis...

IMHO, we need to organize the pro-gunners, antis would then

be much like a fart in a blizzard.
