Can you swap out a commercial tube for a mil spec or are lower receivers made to accept either one or the other?

Ya, but then you will need to replace the stock as well
Same thread pitch. Mil-spec receiver extensions have more complete threads. Whole peaks and valleys of the threads. Commercial receiver extensions have the tops of the peaks milled off.

Yup. That's the idea. Got a good deal on a used STR but its mil spec. Now I have to get a new buffer tube. Can I use the same spring and buffer?

Haha. Will do. Should look like every other ar with an STR on the back end. There may be many like it. But this one is mine!
