Looking at buying a Colt 1911 from the gunsmith. He claims it has be re serial numbered and that number is R101. Is 1911 not 1911 A1 by appearance. Anyone here have any information about this strange to me serial number?

If it was me ........ I would walk away from any gun with #s changed unless there was paper work to go along with it . Stating who & why .
Waiting for gunsmith to wait his 21 days before I have to wait my 10 days. I'm sure that either the re serial numbered pistol will be cleared, issued a new serial number, or rendered by him for destruction. If it's good to go I'm am butchering it into a bit of a custom competition pistol. Shop has been in business since 1947 and is known for their fine builds of 1911 pistols mostly for competition. Will be modified to A-1 type, new barrel, bushing, trigger, spring, grips, sights, etc... Basically this pistol is a donar pistol for the build.

IMO, don't use the 1911 as a build basis for your competition gun.
The cuts missing by the trigger, the temper of the metal may not be good enough.

A new frame will cost you less than what that will cost.

Keep it as a 1911.
