Ok so I'm picking up a colt 1903 here in a few days from a friend of my dad's, it needs refurbishing pretty bad but when I do that I'm considering having it engraved and putting on a new grip (pearl most likely). What I'm wonder really is how will this affect the value of the pistol?

You said "it needs refurbishing pretty bad". If that is true then you will increase the value dramatically. If it is 50% condition or less anyway.

yeah it's pretty bad, it's so rusted it wont fire at all, I've been wanting one for awhile though and the price is right so I'm down to restore it and make it look nice. I don't know that I'd sell it ever but I was just curious as to how much it would effect it. I've seen some nice engraved 1903's on auction sites for 2-3 grand but they don't state whether or not it was done when the gun was made or recently.
