I just came across a Colt 1889 Navy revolver 41lc cal., it has a 3in barrel !! I called Colt they told me that it was made in 1890 ser# 1234x . They said that only 30000 were made and that the one I have , having a 3 in bl ., was very rare !! Gun is in very good condition ! There is only one on the whole net for sale and it has a 4in bl., and they are asking $2,500!!!!! Anyone tell me what mine mite be worth ?? Thank u

Unfortunately, the 3 inch bbl makes it just about worthless. However, I am a decent guy- I can send you enough money to cover the shipping costs if you want to send it to me for disposal.

You DO realize today is April 1?

Seriously, the value of a collectible firearm is whatever some idiot is willing to pay. THAT amount is driven by exact make, model, condition, and originality. In short, there are SO few of some guns sold that there is no way to establish a true value, other than to offer it for sale, or to try to match it up to a similar firearm in similar condition.

And condition drives a LARGE part of value for collectibles. Would urge you to do NOTHING to the gun other than wipedown with light gun oil or CLP and a soft cloth.

An appraisal can give you what the appraiser thinks it is worth. Only a sale would tell you the true value. Old maxim- "The value of an item is what the item will bring on the market."

In the meantime, congrats on having a very nice bit of history!

The 2011 Blue Book of Gun Values indicates:
    1) 31,000 produced between 1889 and 1894
    2) Est. value from 10% condition $300 to 100% $2,250
    3) 3" barrel add 40% to the estimated value
    4) Add 65% to 100% to the estimated value if it has a serial number between 1 and 5,000.

Colt will provide a certified history of the weapon for a fee. The letter will also add to the value of the weapon. You can get added info from the folks at http://www.coltforum.com/

I am willing to sell it for 1,500 with old bow of ammo !!! I was told box of ammo is worth at least $200. Does any one know of any one that would want to add this to there collection ??? Colt said with the 3in bl., and not having notches in cylinder , that it could bring over $3,000 !!!!
