I'm assuming $500 is a good price, too. Aren't decent 1903's going for $800 to $1,000 right now?!?

Decent ones may be, but these now available aren't "decent." And I certainly don't mean any disrespect to the rifle or the CMP. I bought mine three years ago for $400, a 1919 dated Mark I. These rifles were heavily used and most likely hardly ever cleaned. Hence the condition notification on the sales page. I would get one if I had the money, but they aren't NIBs....
Of course you're right. But honestly, when I picked up my '03 from the CMP, they weren't in great condition. The barrel was very good, but the stock was completely soaked in cosmo. I still haven't gotten it clean.

With these new '03s being returns from vet orgs, I just think the quality won't be as good as the rackers they had before. Shot out barrels, uncleaned for years, maybe even chromed. Get one because you want one, but don't be surprised if you feel it's not as good as you hoped. Remember, they served us and ought to be treasured anyway, but don't expect them to be in great condition.
