They sure did. I've never fired one, but lots of oldtimers swear by them. Bigger bore and heavier bullet than a .30-30--probably no slouch for self-defense, either. A friend of my dad's took any number of Colorado elk with one. It's a short-range weapon, though, under 150 yards. Rainbow trajectory and all that.
