According to the History Channel's website:
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

I didn't know either, thanks for asking, now we both learned something today:)

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellman's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. The "Titanic" was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City.

The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today.

It is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo. :p

The Cinco de mayo is a local Puebla celebration that has somehow traveled with them. Most of Mexico does not celebrate the day as anything, in fact the largest celebration of this day is in Portland, OR. Just a bit weird if you ask me.

I think their independence day is Sept 17...

This is now a weak effort by American liberals to make aliens feel good about their history? They call it Multicultureism a $2.00 dollar word for vote Democrate. We all know that an illegel Alien is only an unregistered Democrat anyway.:D
