What do you guys think about a Chinese 53 carbine for $150 plus tax? Would be my first mosin if I get it and don't know a lot about them. Haven't looked at it yet but planning on doing so this afternoon.

    A great little beater-shooter-truck gun.

Make sure the rifling is still there.

If you don't have outrageous expectations,

you will probably be pleased with it.

The good ammo is much more accurate.

Basically it's a Mosin M44 which was manufactured

by the Chinese. AFAIK, there are still clean, like new

M44s available from Eastern Bloc countries, if you want

a better one. They also range from 275$ to 400$, depending

    on condition.

That being said if I could get one for $100 I would get one for a camping gun.

If everything looks good I was thinking about seeing if he would sell the gun and a spam can for 175 or so

Well guys, I went and did it. He wouldn't come down on price but I still ended up buying it. The wood is in pretty good shape, looked down the barrel and seemed to be good through all the grease, brought it home and spent 2 hours cleaning and it was even better than I thought. The action is smooth as butter. I figured if nothing else it'll be an experience and lesson learned if it's not worth 150. All numbers matching except for the butt plate

For about 10 $, you can get a recoil pad.

It serves two purposes. Lengthens the LOP, and

softens the recoil. So you will be replacing the

butt plate with a recoil pad, anyway.

And now all your serials match... ;)

I thought it might have been by a little bit but like I aid if nothing else it's a learning experience. Learn more about what I looking for on the next one. Plus I've just been wanting one for a while. And it was there

What do you guys recommend on ammo? I got 60 rounds of surplus but I'm sure there's better stuff out there that's not expensive

That isn't a bad deal. You did good if u ask me. Hate how a lot of people bash mosins an act like they our the worst guns ever made. I call bull**** on that one. Mosins are great shoots an in some cases can be quite accurate!!

Just shop "mosin parts" with most online suppliers. They're

    not hard to find.

Try J&G Sales, Midway, Buymilsurp.com, and SarcoInc.

BTW, I thought you did OK, for a T53. Prices on M/Ns have been

    rising.

You should get decent use from it. It's one tough rifle.

As to ammo, think 30.06 prices for the good stuff, but

it's reloadable, and much more accurate than surplus.

I've bought Barnes, Hornady, Wolf, WWB, PRVI Partizan, and Speer.

IIRC, most large domestic manufacturers make it. You have to figure

    out your own favorite brand.

Ya, I already ordered one. Also a sling, stripper clips, and one of those little tools that shows you how deep to set the firing pin
