True confession here. In my early 20s (lo these many years ago) I took a fencing class. Had a blast with the Saber portion. Also watched Richard Lester's definitive version of Three and Four Musketeers. Consequently, I would like to own a usable (battle ready) double edged sword of not excessive length, good for cut as well as thrust. The above mentioned firms Side Sword has caught my eye, looks like the closest commercial offering I've found to my desire, and the price seems very reasonable IF it's a quality battle ready item. Does anyone know if it is? Most sword things I've seen here seem more geared toward katanas and I'm NOT the Last Samurai. Not D'Artagnion either, but my inclinations run more in that direction. I'd probably want a buckler tho, or at least a main gauche.

For Hanwei's European swords, be careful and read the description.

Many are designed for stage combat, or fencing. And they provide a blunt blade. The description will tell you so, depending on where you're ordering from. On some of their models, blunt blades can be switched out for live blades, they're interchangeable, which is pretty cool.

With Hanwei, they charge accordingly regarding their products. They do some stuff for people on a budget, but even their budget swords are better than many manufacturers.

    Now here's a secret......

Right now, Sword Buyers Guide is dumping as many high end Hanweis as they can, citing the economy. They're trying to get something back on them, because nobody is buying. They're good guys. And they're doing specials each month. Recently, a $1300 katana went for $400. And worth it.

I have a variety, don't hesitate to ask.

    Here goes....

Welcome to the SBG Sword Store! - Sword Buyers Guide

Alas, no Hanweis this week. These guys review different models and companies, the customs they're doing are through Cheness, excellent quality swords.

They don't try to sell you their stuff, if there's a lowest price on something, they tell you who has it.

If you're considering it, see if there's a place you can handle some. You want a handwidth between your hands, so the grip must be long enough.

Cheness works with 3 different steels, you can check their website for the metallurgy on those. Then decide if you want laminated, folded, mono, etc.

Height is a consideration as well....

Yeah, I started to play around with it and immediately knew that I needed to get "fitted" for a sword and not just spec one out on a website by "want".

So, I am considering the Tango instead. :p
