Ok heres the situation. I cant decide to buy a 308 or 223. I want a H&R survivor series single shot, but I cant decide in 308 or 223. They both have their respective advantages. I like the 223 for hunting coyotes, I like the 308 for dear and elk here. (I dont know why for hunting I like a single shot). 223 ammo is less expensive per box, but I can load 308 and I am sure get awsome accuracy. Just too hard to decide. I can't get both cause that would just get me killed by a very understanding wife. Help be out here guys give me some input!!

Do you already have a deer/elk gun? If not I'd opt for the .308. You can work up loads for just about everything.

110gr V-max will sure make a mess of a yote. and 150gr to 165gr is good for deer and 180 gr for elk. I vote 308.

I'd go with the.308. Especially for the deer and elk. But in Colorado you could still run into an angry moose, so I personally would get rid of the understanding wife, buy both guns and add a 7mm rem mag,and a .454 Casull handgun to the mix, buy lots of brass, dies, primers, powders, bullets. And find a not so understanding wife!:D

If you can load .308 the price won't be much different and it's a single shot rifle. I guess it comes down to, do you want to take out deer or coyotes more often?

The .308 with 150 to 200 grain bullets will work well for deer and elk. Lighter bullets can be used for coyotes.

The .223 will work well for coyotes, and with the right bullet (Barnes TSX) can work for deer. But it's definitely not an elk round.

Well guys I decided to go with the .223 I already have a couple 30-06s and they do great for anything big game in CO. I picked up a little H&R bull barrell. It was only 250 so now I can maybe get a decent scope to go with it. As soon as I get it all put together I will post pics and a range report.

I believe you can send the rifle to H&R later to have another barrel fitted in 308. Might want to consider that option as funds permit.

The .308 works fine on 'yotes, too, and you can hit them harder farther out.

Am I smelling bitterness? You almost threw me off the scent with the fragrance of .454 Casull, but bitter is definitely rising out of some ashes you've got.

No bitterness here, life is good! Was just joking!:D
Also just read your thread on your AR build, good luck, I’m staying tuned in on that as it is something I am also considering to attempt! And thank you for all the links you have provided there! I am learning a lot:)
