Yes. Probably need to change the mag spring as well.

Yeah I think you can. Take it to a gun smith though.

The beauty of a Mossberg is that the mag tube is just threaded into the receiver, unlike a Remington 870 thta has it brazed in. The barrel then just attaches like it would when you strip it down for cleaning. Big things to avoid are clamping teh reciever too tightly into a vice and deforming it. And don't use just any old wrench on the mag tube, because it can be dented and prevent loading and feeding.

Isn't there a difference in magazine tubes between the 2?
Where the 590 uses an open end tube with a magazine tube cap to attach the barrel.....the 500 uses a closed end tube with a takedown screw???

Yes, excellent point. The appropriate mag tube and cap would need to be used as well.

As far as i know, there are no 28" barrels made that fit the 590 mag tube but you can switch the mag tube to a 500 tube and then use *all* the barrels made for the model 500. The 500 mag tube will let you use everything from an 18" shorty barrel to 20-24" rifled and unrifled barrels for sabot slugs, the 26" classic and the 28" long barrels, the 32" extra long barrel, the blackpowder muzzleloader barrel etc etc etc. A replacement 500 tube should be the first accessory that *all* 590 owners buy.

Switching the mag tube takes about a minute with no tools necessary, switching barrels takes 30 secs. :D

Very nice, but can you do all that vice versa? Instead of buying a 500 magazine tube for the 590. can you just buy the mossberg 500 and if you want the goodies of a 590 later down the road buy the 590s 9 shot magazine tube, spring, end cap, and the 590s 18 inch thick barrel? Can all that go onto the 500? Basically what im asking is can you convert the 500 into a 590?

by switching the appropriate parts you could convert either direction. If you have a 590 you could convert it to a 500, or you can convert a 500 to a 590. Both would require mag tubes and barrels, because of the differing lengths and differing barrel ring locations and mag cap vs take down screw.

Yes, there are no long barrels for the 590.

So the mossberg 500 reciever accepts 590 mag tubes spring end cap and barrel?

Yes. Or at least the barrel and mag. The mag accepts the cap.

I have both and would recommend you save your receipts. I will try in the morning but it appears the barrel on my 590 is beefier and will not fit into the 500 receiver. Without the barrel the mag tube will not transfer onto the 500 from the 590 because of design differences. I am sure I could take it out to the shop and make it work but would not recommend anyone else shoot it than me.

    Just my 2 cents.

The barrel walls are thicker, but pretty sure the mounting shank is macined to the same dimensions.

I just researched into this some more, and read that the threads on the 500, 5+1 capacity 500, 7+1 have different thread pitches where the magazine tube threads into the receiver. The 8's threads are coarser and made to be removed by hand. Your best bet is to get the combo pack for the gun you want, and not have to worry about what or wont will fit.

I know squat about 590s except I should have one and don't. But the 500 long and short mag tubes are interchangeable. I swapped mine to a couple different guns then swapped it to a P.U. member, Buff Dragon to put on his stock 500. Brownells sells the long tube and parts as a kit. Have a feeling by the time one bought the 590 parts you could come close to a new gun. I have found little use for swapping barrels except shot tubes. My scoped slug gun loses too much zero when I try to put the H.D. barrel on for the summer.
