I have inherited this gun, and me and noone I know has any idea what type it is or what caliber. A couple parts are missing, there is a band that goes on the end of the barrel to hold the front of the stock on, and the but stock plate is missing. All the writing on it is in what I am guessing to be japanese or chinese. It needs to be restored but if it's not worth my time I'd like to know, and I can;t buy parts until I know what it is of course. Thanks for any help you can provide in advance.

disregaurd, I found (with the help of google) that it's a 1939 Arisaka type 99. it may or may not be very valuable, but it has enough history and quality that it will soon be a restored and beautiful gun.

Wait on restoring it.

Does it have a Mum on the top of the reciever. These are rare and most sought after jap wwII rifles. I can't tell form the photo but it looks to have the mum under the glare from the flash.
