The 2nd Most Dangerous city in the U.S. and they are going to do a massive layoff of police and firefighters! Better arm up! This reminds me what Oakland, CA did with their police department and cutting back on calls!

Camden City Council Approves Massive Police And Fire Layoffs « CBS Philly – News, Sports, Weather, Traffic and the Best of Philadelphia

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – Camden City Council, as expected, voted Thursday to lay off almost 400 workers, half of them police officers and firefighters, to bridge a $26.5 million deficit.

That’s about a quarter of the city’s entire work force.

Five members of City Council voted unanimously to approve the layoff plan — two other members were absent. The cuts take effect in mid-January.

Exactly how many city workers will be affected is still an open question, although nearly half the city’s police and a third of the firefighters are slated to go.

I would really like more info on this. What did Christie do that they suggest is the issue? I don't know enough about the local politics and budgets to know who did what in this instance.

When you are the 2nd most dangerous city in the country, having a police department at all seems to be a moot point...all that can happen is that you get the recognition of being the 1st most dangerous city in America...

Camden was taken over by the state last year and most of the inner city policing is done by the State Police anyways.

Two points. (1) The first thing city councils always cut is police and firefighters to frighten the populace into OKing whatever spending measures they purpose. Here, whenever they want to cut school spending they cry "athletics and classroom teachers must be cut". (2) When the salaries of police and firefighters reach a certain threshold what can you do? Our junior Senator, on his way out the door as mayor of Anchorage gave the city unions a thank-you gift of 5 year contracts that raised wages and benefits about 9% per year. The city cannot pay an extra 9% per year, which virtually guarantees that 9% of employees must be laid off every year for the next 5 years. Of course, Union rules state the most junior employees be laid off, while the highest paid stay, so it's actually more like a 12% layoff rate. The unions predictably blame the new mayor for making the city less safe. But what's he supposed to do? He can't print money like Obama to pay off his cronies. They're not even his cronies, which of course is some of the rub.

Typical, fire and police!! Must not have had authority to fire all the school teachers or close the hospitals!

Yep...this is the oldest trick the politicians continually use against citizens. Rather than cut true waste, in order to blackmail taxpayers, they'll use scare tactics of laying off fire fighters and police officers to leverage for taxes and increased spending.

It's a real testament to the lack of general respect politicians have for the very people who put their sorry butts in office and pay their salaries.
