Heard on the morning news that some enterprising snake oil salesman is selling $200 bullet proof backpacks for school children. One parent in the story was buying two, one for school, and one to wear to the movies. How effective would a bullet proof backpack be? Is this manufacturer taking advantage of the situation? What message is being sent to small kids.? Will these kids need professional help to get over the fear of going outside because people might shoot me? Good grief! May be we deserve to have the world end this Friday. Things are getting nuts.

I'm all for it is they work... And if the users know the limitations of the backpacks.
Israeli children go to school and out in public where they see machine guns (GASP) on a daily basis. They seem to be doing fine.
I'd want one myself for college, since its a gun free zone and all.

what are you going to do with a bullet proof backpack? crawl inside it? wear one front and back? and since most of these shootings are now involving rifles with 30 round mags...does this bookbag have ballistic plates in it like the US body armor? or is this the standard kevlar vest like what cops wear that only works on handgun ammo? are the schools going to allow students to wear a backpack around all day long?

no, I won't be buying my kid a bullet proof backpack. I think I'll teach him how to get low, either get out, or get behind cover, and a last resort, lay down and play dead.

The children in Newtown were shot in their classrooms. Most likely their backpacks were in lockers.

Maybe they should think about virtualizing the classroom. We have the technology. Its time technology took a front seat. That would eliminate azzholes shooting up a class full of children... :)

I asked the mayor, he said it would cost too much
