Which two handguns (primary and backup) would you pick for a bug-out situation ? Choices cannot weight more than 5 lbs total for the handguns and ammo.

    My choices are:

    1. a Sig p229 in .357 Sig with an extra barrel in .40 S&W, three extra magazines (48 rds. total). 32 oz for the gun and say 24 oz for the ammo, barrel and mags (I didn't actually weigh the barrel here but I'm assuming 6 oz. for that).

    2. Diamondback DB9 in 9mm Luger with 2 extra mags (18 rds total). 11 oz for the gun and say 8 oz for the ammo and mags.

I figured the ammo by bullet weight (7000 grains per pound)

Total weight here is 75 oz which should still be under 80 oz allowing for powder weight and brass casings.

My choice for SHTF handgun would be my new FNP .45 and one of my 1911's.

Not sure about weight with these, but the FNP is tough and holds 15 rounds in the mag. The 1911 is one of the most popular guns around, so parts are easy to come by. Also they both shoot .45 so if one fails I can still use all my ammo.

Another good choice would be a m9, because there are tons out there so mags and parts would be easy to find, this is the same with a glock 17. But I am not that big of a 9mm fan, even though I do have a 92fs.

A "bug out" pistol for me would be a have the following characteristics:

    • Polymer
    • Medium-Full capacity and frame
    • 9mm

Period. I love 1911s, steel framed guns, revolvers, and am quite happy shooting larger calibers. But...

Polymer guns are light (critical), generally high capacity, and endure a great deal of abuse and even neglect. Medium-Full because I want to carry max rounds within the gun as opposed to a multitude of extra boxes/mags of ammo. I also want a firearm I can precisely control. 9mm because it's an adequate defense round, is the easiest centerfire caliber to track down, and because it fits nicely with the two previously mentioned theories involving weight and capacity.

That's just my perspective. For me it'd be an XDm9. But a similarly designed Glock, S&W, etc would suffice.

Will take a different direction here-

    1. Dan Wesson Mdl 15 .357 Mag revolver- with two barrels- 2 inch, and 10 inch. 2 is concealable. 10 inch shoots like a carbine. 38 sp or 357, and in an absolute emergency can be jerry rigged to shoot 9mm (NOT RECOMMENDED!.

    2. Ruger Mk III .22 pistol. 6 inch bbl. Quiet, 200 rds of ammo weighs a pound, found everywhere.

Of the guns a currently own it would be my P95 Ruger and my Ruger Single 10 in .22. .22 is THE most common round and you carry a ton of them. The P95 because it is a 9mm,light weight, medium/large frame and is hi cap. Leaving my beloved 1911's would break my heart but I would do it, of course in real a life SHTF situation I would not be limited by the limits of this thread and my 1911's would be with me.

It would have to be the only pistol I have. My S&W 40. It should fit the bill.

S&W Mod 66! Regular ammo, shot cartridges, and I still have flare cartridges issued to Navy pilots.

My two choices are my full size 1911 and my officers size 1911. I would also include a reliable survival knife.

My wife and I have matching SR9c Rugers. Everything is interchangeable. That is one each so we can add a 22lr target pistol and/or a 22lr rifle.

I like some of my others just as well!
But for reasons of simplicity of carrying only one caliber of ammunition with me I would take my Glock 22 and my Glock Model 27 both in 40 cal. That way I could pack as many rounds as I could carry (40 Cal.) and they would work in both weapons. Including the 22 Mags would work in the 27 to increase capacity. They would have more capacity than my beloved 1911 45s. Other than that my choice would have been my 1911s.:)

I have not put a bag together yet. But I am thinking I might do it pretty soon. I will be realistic and not put my best guns in a bag that will be hidden somewhere in the case that I can not get to my safe. I will probably throw my Ruger P95 in it with my Heritage Rough Rider. Several hundred rounds of 22lr for small game. 100 rounds of 9mm JHP for SD. Chances are my Kahr 9mm would already be in my front pocket anyway.
