Which BAR? The military light machinegun from WW 1, or the civilian sporting rifle?

The civilian BAR is one of the most accurate autoloaders I have ever had. They are the Mercedes of hunting rifles.

    Owners manual: http://stevespages.com/pdf/browning_bar_1.pdf

I hear they are very nice guns. I have looked at them, and even the plainer ones are beautiful.

If you are talking about the military version, it is also a very good gun, just beautiful in a different way.:p

My Dad owns a sporter BAR in 30-06, he's 70 and shoots groups about 1.5" at 100 yds.
Needless to say, I have to be on my "A" game when we go shootin' and I bring one of my bolt guns.

Have an older BAR in .243.

Remember these are light barrel sporters, not a bull barreled target rifle-
with the right ammo, a nickel will cover a 5 shot group at 100 yards.

Look closely - there are 2 generations of the sporting rifle (Steve's pages has both manuals).

1st generation does not have the bolt release (to release the bolt from locked back position). It's a little harder to
disassemble and clean but still workable with practice. The key to the BAR (any model) is proper cleaning and lubrication.

I love the older brownings. I have my granddads A5 Belgian...made in the 50's IIRC. He carried it bird hunting for 30+ years and it's still one of the prettiest in the safe.

    Nice acquisition there, BD!

Congrats- that is a very nice looking rifle. From the wood, you may have one of the higher grade rifles. It is enough gun for anything on this side of the planet, and I suspect you will find it is more accurate than you are.

The only negative I could find...
Such a pretty rifle deserves a prettier butt pad than that!
