A friend asked me to bore sight his mosin nagant. Never did this before and I'm new to gunsmithing. So from what I head a collimator is the best way to boresight. Any brand or specific type I should look for.

I prefer the new laser bore sighters, like this one:
    http://www.laserlyte.com/products/mbs-1

I broke one of the bushings, Laserlyte customer service sent me a complete new set free of charge, they even paid the postage.

Another easy method is to - remove the bolt, place gun so you can look thru bore, align bore(by looking thru it) with an object or target, without moving gun adjust scope so crosshairs align with same object, you are done. Shoot gun for final adjustment.

Great method. Next is to make sure the scope is not canted or the base not aligned. Either will cause problems.

or you can go buy a boresight kit and get it correct the first try. a set of levels is not a bad idea also

Best to have the gun in a shooting vice or proper rest. If you don't have those then sandbags will work, just not quite as well.
