How should one test trigger pull?
Use snap caps and hold onto barrels to get scale to "sit" correctly?

Get the best trigger pull gauge you can afford. I have a vise with leather-faced jaws whereby I clamp the barrel(s) in, so the firearm is in a horizontal position. Snap caps are NEVER a bad idea, but with a centerfire, you can get away without those, if you must.
Although I do have a couple of "spring" style pull gauges, I much prefer the Lyman electronic trigger pull gauge that works using a strain-gauge load cell type of system. With this gauge I can do 10 pulls and then get the average in a relatively short time.
