For Christmas we got my son a 50 pound bag of coal and today he got the forge together and got his first taste of real blacksmithing. He is working with a railroad spike and making a tomahawk or a knife. Here are some pics.

You know it! I played hob getting it though. I had to drive an hour up to San Francisco to the only supplier in the Bay Area ( http://www.lazzari.com/industry-bituminouscoal.html ). Out here coal is hard to come by.

I was just an hour too late to pick up a mini mill for my other son for Christmas. A friend was letting it go real cheap but I had to get the OK from mom to spend the $200 first. In the time it took to get the OK it was gone:(.

When my dad was alive we spent many days at the forge. Maybe you should move the gas cans in the picture a little farther away from the hot sparks :)

I was wondering how soon somebody would notice that! We moved the forge as soon as it cooled down enough. Ambient temperature was in the 40's so the gas was not really a danger. (piss poor excuse but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
