the 300 magnum will effectively take care of all those. my suggestion of a nice winchester 70 with a detachable bipod still stands although if your in need of a more tactical looking rifle or like the idea of a detachable magazine i believe savage makes a reasonably priced rifle, and the remington 700s are nice and cz makes a cz 550 magnum h.e.t. in the high dollar range. but with a little modification the model 70 is quite the tactical rifle and the bolt is smooth as butter.

as a side note are u really hunting bears?

Not neccesarily hunting, more like protection from them because my brothers cabin is right in the middle of grizzly country. I don't believe in actually tracking down, and hunting a bear for no reason. Simply protective purposes. Guess I should have specified that.

For bear protection you need something that is fast to use up close and personal. A rifle set up for 1000 yards is a poor choice unless you are actively hunting them. A 12 gauge with slugs or a Marlin Guide gun in 450 mag or 45-70. Bears are fast. A lot faster than people think.

3" 12ga slug is a better option. The only way to slow a Grizzly down at close range is mass weight. Dixie makes a 1.67oz terminator. It is pretty hardcore.

If you use the Thornily Stopping Power theory an elephant takes 250, this slug is 348 on the stopping power scale.

Well that solves my bear issue (already got a 12 gauge that I keep up there, loaded with buckshot and slugs) but not my active hunting issues, which would be solved with a 300 win mag bolt gun

Hello, I am looking for an all-around bada** tactical rifle that I can feel confident in. I want something that can reach out and nail a 1000 yd target but also be able to be taken hunting as well. I know I'm looking at polar opposites here, but that's why I came to the gurus of FTF because you often can find me what I want or damn close to it. I already have a few things in mind. Such as building a rifle around the Rem 700 action, or going with a Savage 110 BA. I was looking at the 300 win mag or 338 Lapua (leaning more to the 300) and my price ceiling is about $2500. Help me please?
I also have looked into building a similar rifle and in my research I found a knowledgable person who stated the 300 would have to have a barrel change around 1300 rounds at the cost of $600. This is just something to keep in mind for the extra cost and the time it will take to have it done.

Just because I'm anti-NRA doesn't make me anti-gun, anti-American or anti-2nd amendment, just as you are most likely anti-Obama but pro-African Americans in government.
