I use my mossberg 917 12 GA w heavy field loads. A Remington 870 20 GA w #6 or #7½ heavy field loads would work well as well. Its what my aunt and little cousin uses.

i use to use a 20 ga years ago for dove hunting. like Marlinman, i think the Remington 870 in 20 ga would be just great for dove hunting. i used an older single shot 20 ga!

So did I starting out. A NEF partner youth to be exact;) then I moved to a mossberg o/u 12/20. Still got both. Still use the o/u for skeet sometimes. Just for the challenge;)

12 ga. #8, which is Dove Shot, or Home Defense ammo if you've watched Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds one too many times...

Top barrel is 20 GA and bottom barrel is 12 GA. Not to many of em made that way. They are a good gun though. Mine has 28" barrels.

    I like my 1100 Trap.
Bud had Benelli Montefeltro 20 that I think might be the cat's meow...........if you are in an area where you can use lead.

I like my doubles for dove. I used to have a 12 gauge that disappeared from the house somehow and now only have my 20 Weatherby. Using the over/unders helps me to keep focused on only two targets or one follow up shot, saves lots of shells. I find I go through too many shells if I use the pump, and if I hit what I shoot at it is harder to find the extra bird if I actually get three in one flight. I use anywhere from #8 to #6 shot game loads.

Now is double or pump action personal preference, or are there ups and downs to have one or the other.

I am the very satisfied owner of a 20 ga Monte. it is a pheasant killing machine. I am confident it would work for dove also.

For doves here, shooting over wild hemp patches, I use my Winchester model 42 pump .410, and my wife loves her Ithaca 20 ga double. We use #7-1/2 shot, and get good range.
