Which is the best service rifle for competition the AR15(.223) or the M14(.308)?
How far will you be shooting? I have no experience with an AR but an M1A with a good scope should be good to go out to 800m.
A+ to the M14
Only 100 and 200 yrds.
rock river arms and white oak ar15 simply dominate service rifle matches.
ive got a rra service rifle and turner saddlery sling
some 300 yard iron sight groups
i highly highly recomend the rra service rifles. i ordered mine bead blasted finish on the barrel.
Thi question was answered quite some time ago. The AR, denegrated early on as "a mouse gun," has replaced the M1A. It is common for heavier-than-62 gr. bullets to be used especially at 600 yards and beyond...
I find Turners a little spongy myself -- they are top shelf but really gotta stretch 'em out first.
mine is the biothane version. my wife uses biothane tack for her horse and that stuff is awesome all weather leather substitute. it does feel different but having a sling that doesnt slowly degrade and loosen over time is kinda nice.
one other thing. its not easy keeping a M1A in shooting trim. with a AR15 when you shoot out a barrel its plug and play to get a new one. diy. cant do that with a M1A. about the time you get everything running in a M1A like a clock something wears out and accuracy degrades then you gotta start over trying to diagnose the problem. once you find the issue fix it something else goes out of kilter. while this doesnt effect combat accuracy a bit, it doesnt lend itself well to maintaining match accuracy over the long haul. thats a big reason you dont see many folks using m1a in service rifle anymore.
Thanks -- never even LOOKED at the biothane. Just switched to black leather, and put it in a closet with a tool-box hanging from it for a coupla months, when I switched to the AR over the M1A myself. Never did bother to try to take the grip spray off the wood...
I would recommend the Rock River Arms NM AR-15. And JonM is correct they dominate the National Matches at Camp Perry Ohio and other competitions. I know one year they sold 300 of them at Camp Perry in the two weeks they were at their store at the Match. Great Rifle!
