XD tactical all the way, in my humble opinion. Much better of a package deal, and the ergonomics are much better.

The best way to figure it out for yourself is to fondle both pistols for awhile and see which one gives you the better "warm fuzzy".

a lot comes down to personal preference and what you are looking for.

the xd will obviously be lighter and hold more ammunition. the beretta will probably recoil less due to its added weight and it has a true manual safety/decocker which some people like a lot.

as to reliability, they are probably pretty close. as someone already mentioned, go down to the store and handle both of them, see which one you like most.

in my personal opinion, i think most shooters will probably go with the XD.

for me personally, i would go with the beretta.

Well, you are trying to compare apples and oranges..The Beretta 96FS is the 40 with an alloy frame, (the 92 is a 9mm) and the XD is polymer. A better comparison would be the XD & the Beretta PX4 Storm..In that case, the PX4 would be my choice. Now, a 3rd option is the Beretta 90-Two in 40. Unlike the 96, the 90-Two was designed to be a 40 and has a built in frame recoil buffer for just that reason. That would be my choice of the 3 guns. The 90-Two also has a slimmer grip avail as an option from Beretta for $10 for those with smaller hands.
