Whats the big deal with the chrome moly lined barrels on AR's?

I think i know this but figured i would ask the "experts".

Spotted a Spikes tactical for a good price but the barrel is NOT lined.

the purpose of chrome lining is durability under sustained full auto fire. basically it takes a lot longer to erode a chrome lined chamber and bore. most people arent going to shoot enough to warrant the extra expense.

there is a recent benefit as well. chrome lined chambers allow easy use of steel cased ammunition. most steel ammo has a lacquer layer which under heat will melt and bind to a non-chrome chamber causing fail to extract issues. line it with chrome and the lacquer wont stick.

so if your shooting full auto or 5000+ a year or more or are using steel cased ammo you might want chromed linings.

chrome also makes it easier to clean. cheap chrome linings arent as accurate as untreated barrels. the cheaper chroming proccesses dont leave an even layer. what sort of chrome lining spike's uses i dont know.

What's the difference in cost where you're looking, fmj? I'd pay extra myself for chrome lining.

If you want a highly accurate AR you will not want a chrome lined bore. Some deside if you want a plinker /range fun rifle and something light weight that works on a carbine course or something to shot long range hunting with or benchrest with.

    Thanks guys.

I am just getting it as a "plinker"/hedge against SHTF. Another family "fun gun". A gun the wife and younger kids can shoot comfortably. Take some of the wear and tear off the Ruger .44 carbine.

Not real sure the difference in cost....just saw one in my price range and remember guys on here saying a Spikes is a quality piece of equipment.

Again, I will be buying one here in the next month or so and am doing my due diligence before purchasing considering I am new to the platform.

There are chrome lined barrels and chrome moly barrels. You don't line a barrel with chrome moly. If you want a good SHTF gun, get a chrome lined. They are more fogiving of imperfect maintenance. If you want the best possible accuracy get a chrome moly barrel. This is all relative, of course. I have a chrome lined 20" A-2 that will shoot 1 1/2" 60 shot groups at 100. I hve a friend that has a chrome moly "match" 20" that struggles to shoot 4" at the same distance.
