Has anyone ever heard of a barrel "exploding" from obstructions in it? What is the best way to prevent this from happening?

Don't let mud get in the muzzle and don't own a Remington.

If it makes you feel better, before you use the gun just check the barrel. If you clean it after each use and take care with the gun, nothing should get it the barrel. The only shotgun I've seen do this was a Winchester and it only split the barrel not explode.
