Looks to be case hardened. Not sure of the process but I love the look

nice looking rifle! it is color case hardening. and that one is done very well indeed.

color case hardening is more cosmetic now. many years ago they did it to make the metal harder. they didn't have the tools and equipment to machine and shape hardened metals capable of withstanding the pressures when a cartridge was fired. so they worked the metal in the softer state and then when finished would color case harden it to make it stronger. different materials would creat different colors in the metals when they cooled down. very difficult process to do, but gives some very beautiful results when done correctly.

Not my cup of tea - not sure why its so popular or the appeal of having a gun look like a photo negative.
mostly done on older, antique or reproduction firearms. looks much better on firearms that would have been done originally with this type of treatment. but on that AR, it looks good because the reciever is steel instead of aluminum and it is a unique look for a modern rifle.
