So my girlfriend's father handed me a Type 38 Arisaka (very nice, chrome-lined barrel, looks like it was restocked during the war) and asked me to fix it. Apparently he handed to his friend (a self-proclaimed firearms "expert") for inspection and when he got it back the bolt was locked up. Can't flip it up, let alone cock it back. Not quite sure what the problem is, but I've narrowed it down to the pictures I'll show you all. Back of the bolt appears to somehow be stuck on the shelf of the bolt release lever. I really hope somebody knows how to fix this. And no worries, the chamber is empty.

Having trouble making our pictures (screen I am using at moment) so will ask the dumb question- is the safety in the OFF position?

No such things as a stupid question, I appreciate any help I can get. The safety feels like it's stuck. I believe that piece I can see through the bolt lever is the safety tang. I think the owner's "expert" friend got drunk, tore it apart, and may have reassembled it wrong. Is there another way to remove the bolt? I figure if I can get the bolt out I can disassemble it and reassemble it properly.

Have you tried pressing in on safety w/ heel of hand and rotating?

Yup. If I screw with it a bit I can usually get it to press in, but it will not rotate. I'll try it again when I get home and let you know how it goes.

How on Earth did he do that!!!???

Your firing pin and safety are in wrong, The firing pin is sideways and the safety is upside down. The "tabs" on both should be on the bottom of the bolt.

If your still having trouble, let me know.. I can take a pic of my Arisaka bolt... :)

Ok so I stripped the whole thing down and removed the trigger group and I still couldn't move the bolt even close to enough to remove it. I tried unscrewing the safety but it won't twist at all. Not sure what to do next. Any thoughts? I'm starting to worry this rifle is ruined.

UPDATE: FIXED HER!!! Thanks for all the help guys every piece of advice got me one step closer. I had to ram the firing pin lug up with a screwdriver until the safety popped up enough that I could twist it off (the knob shot off and almost left a dent in the ceiling). Then a quick reassembly and she's good to go!

    similar problem

Just got a type 38. the bolt will only move from full down to almost all the way vertical. Safety compresses but will not turn. The safety tang looks like it will not clear the block which holds it in place, even when I put my weight against the safety knob.

Anyone have any detailed pictures of what I need to do? There isnt much out there that sounds exactly like my problem.
