I've built a couple of bolt actions on Mauser actions and I own and shoot a rock river AR. Thinking about trying my hand at building one. Any good books you'd recommend or is that even needed? Websites with good ideas? What about special tools? Thanks in advance.

not even needed dude. i watched one video on how to assemble the lower and did it myself the other weekend. the stripped lower is the most complex part. took me less than 30 mins and that included testing out the safety lever and the mag release a few times. i've never even shot an AR or taken one apart either. i will say that i'm very good with my hands though and i love taking stuff apart and putting it back together. but it's def something you can do.

    here's the video i used:

it's good to know how the gun is assembled as well, they're pretty complex when compared to something like an SKS. lots of springs and detents lol.

    good luck.

Another option, that could be fun, is to break down your AR and put it back together :) Yes it will save you a lot of money, and you will learn etc - now, that does take away the obvious awesomeness that is buying another AR... :) I personally vote buy and build hehe. But, just thought I would be practical for a moment. Honestly, I feel kind of cheesy recommending that at all, so let's forget I did...

Oh, another thing, youtube is FULL of really well done build videos. The one above is decent. Here are some others:

that should get you started :) Those are two decent well done series on building an AR from start to finish.

The competitive AR15 Builders Guide by Glen D. Zediker is a good book. Yea you can watch youtube videos all day long but its the little details that a good book gives you. I'm in the process of building my AR and I have watched all the videos and I have learned alot. But to me nothing beats a good gun book.
