Im sure this has been discussed a million times and ill be the a**hole who didnt use the search bar, but other than Adams Arms who has some reasonably priced piston uppers? I dont want garbage but I just cant justify $1200+ on an upper for mostly plinking. That being said I really like the piston upper idea and dont want an upper without that included. Any suggestions?

my opinion is pistons in a ar15 just arent a real improvement. your typically adding weight and unbalancing the system making it feel front heavy for no real gain in reliabilty or functionality.

my recomendation skip the ar15 if you want a piston gun and get a rifle that is designed from the get go to be a piston gun. things like m1a ak47 fal scar garand etc

just my two cents take it for what its worth

Besides the added weight, I really dont like the recoil impulse. Di is so much smoother.

People claim they are cleaner , well it just depends on where you want the gunk to go , DI ends up in the lower and trigger guts , no bid deal spray it out with brake clean , re lube and keep going , Piston just gets build up in the hand guard area so to claim its a cleaner running gun its really BS its just where you want the nasty sh!t to go .
I will take the gunk in the lower any day its a easier , quicker clean up and I wont have to take the handguard off and take a chance on messing up my front sight zero .

Well with your built in restrictions plus CA's this AR is looking less and less promising. Maybe you'd better also look at the Mini-14 for a 5.56 piston and no evil features.

Well, the only thing about a Cali featured AR that applies to the upper is the overall barrel length. Piston or Di systems shouldn't affect your deicision.

The lower on the other hand......
