I bought a ar just recently and i really like the idea of using it for varmits and possibly deer. I was just wondering what ur guys opinions are on this ? Reason i ask is a few guys i work with talk crap on ars all day. And say there no hunting gun. And they arent worth a damn for accuracy. .... but they have never shot or owned one

Oh!!!!! I thought you were hunting ARs. Not hunting with an AR.:p I hunt small game with an AR. Roe deer, fox and badger. People on this site also hunt larger deer and pig/boar. Personally I would hunt larger game with a semi auto rifle chambered for a .30 caliber round like an AR10 or AK-47/M (7.62x51 and 7.62x39). I just bought an AK-47 to hunt larger game. Who cares what others think. Do not be a sheep.....be yourself.

Make sure it is legal to hunt big game with an AR15 in your state. Like in VA your gun has to be 23 cal or larger. The AR15 is great for small game and varmints.

99.9999999% of ARs will shoot minute of deer, pig, 'yote, etc. if the shooter does her/his job. I prefer a larger round for deer, but .223 will take deer. As others have noted, check minimum caliber requirements for game in your state, if minimum is centerfire in .22 or larger you are ok.

If .23 or larger is required, you could get a 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC or other larger AR15 friendly calibers.

I have a 6.8 SPC, which is the same diameter bullet as the .270 Win. that I put together for deer hunting.

I varmint hunt with my 223,and hunt everything with the 458 SOCOM and the 260 Rem AR-10. If someone says an AR style rifle isn't a hunting rifle, they have probably never owned or shot one.

The one nit of advice I will give you is make sure you use a premium hunting bullet if you are going after deer. I like the .223 Federal Fusion 62 gr.

To those who say that an AR is not a hunting rifle. Tell them that the only difference between war and hunting is that, in war the prey shoots back.

I call the BS card here. I have spend two years 'at war' (11+ years in the military) and 50+ years at hunting (not to mention 40+ years in LE) and the two are TOTALLY different environments which require different weapons and ammo.

If it is legal where you hunt, and you elect to 'try' and take big game (deer and hogs are big game animals) with this varmint caliber be sure to use the heaviest and tough bullets and take only shots where you have a perfect presentation at limited ranges.
If you want to hunt 'big game' with an AR do as I and my brother and nephews do and get an AR in 7.62X51 (308 Winchester).;)

It all depends on where you live. In the south deer and pigs are TYPICALLY medium game. I.E. Under 220lbs.
    .223 is plenty for either.

What is average size for a grown buck there? IMO anything bigger than 220lbs and I'd go up to at least .243win
