I am thinking about getting some type of optic for my AR. I won't be using my rifle past 100 yards. I want to be able to shoot targets easily at 25,50,75 and 100 yards. Not sure if I should look for a rifle scope, red dot or acog. I don't have a very big budget somewhere around 300. Any suggestions?

Vortex sparc red dot, looks just like aimpoint micro, comes with a 2x magnifier, great red dot. I use one on my daniel defense, they run around 200.00

The Vortex Strikefire is a solid choice also and less expensive. You can't beat Vortex IMHO at that pricepoint. I bought a couple right before Christmas at PSA for $119. They usually run around $169.

Do those have a reticle to compensate for range?

The vortex strikefire is a solid red dot. I have been running it on my ar15 for about 4 months now. Havent had any problems with it. Droped it a few times once in the snowy stream!! Oh yah still alive and i dident even have to rezero it. For under 200 you cant go wrong. I plain this summer to really put it through its paces. Let u know how it holds up.

On the topic of optics, what is that set up I see guys running that looks like 2 scopes, one in front of the other?

Most likely a red dot, then a magnifier. My red dot is threaded on the eye piece and came with a 2x magnifier

Yup most of the time is a magnifier. You might also see a red dot or scope with night vision.

Take a look at the little Leupold 1.5-4X20 "African."

A little over your $300 target, but well worth it.

Are there cheaper acog style scopes?

Bushnell makes an optic that looks almost identical, way cheaper and functions perfectly. I have a buddy who uses one and he loves it.

If you are keeping your shots inside 100 yards as previously stated you wouldn't really need drop compensation for a AR chambered in .223/5.56. A 25yd zero would have you hitting just slightly high at 100 yds as the bullet wouldn't have reached the high point of its arc yet.

There's cheap junk for sale everywhere. You will know it by it's price tag.:)
