According to this site, you may need a permit to own one, but it should be possible. I am not sure what limitations might be imposed. In New York, we can't have a bayonet lug, collapsible stock, threaded barrel, grenade launcher or flash hider if it was made after September of '96. Go to the site above, click on California and read through the PDF.

You should also call your local law enforcement. Even though something may be legal to own in parts of the state, it may be illegal in a particular local (like inside city bounds).

After looking at this chart showing the cost of government by state, Alaska comes out the cheapest (lowest overall burden). So, hell yes, Alaska is looking pretty good.

You can get 'off the books' receivers and use either a Prince 50 or Bullet Button mag release and a 10 round magazine. With that setup, you can have what ever features you want on the upper. When you go to a gun friendly state, you change the mag release out and can run 30 magazines that work the way they're intended to work.

It takes about 2 minutes to change out a magazine release and its a $10 part.

You have to be 21 now to buy firearms in California.

An AR-15/M870 combo is illegal in Cali because it's a destructive device. You can get them in other states as an SBS though.

I meant that I will be buying an AR-15 first, and then a Remington 870 later.


I never liked the "Master key" set up.

When did the law change to 21?

Okay. I knew about the handguns being 21, but I don't think a AR that meets the standards of a non-assault-weapon rifle is 21. I'll check with local LE, and the local gun store.
