I bought a used AK yesterday at my local gun shop ($500 for those wondering).

I knew going in it was a Maadi, which I had read was a good copy.

After inspection I found out it is a MISR S/A. I have read about the MISR 10 and the MISR 90, but not the S/A. Is mine a 10 or a 90 by any chance??

Is there anything I should know about this particular variant?

I shot it yesterday, and it's pretty damn accurate. Everything cycled well despite being dirty as hell. I couldn't believe the amount of gunk I pulled out of this gun when I took it apart last night.

It is in fact a Maadi MISR S/A 7.62 AK

The maadi's are highly regarded as being very reliable and one of the more reliable variants out there.

Mak90 is another such variant in the same reliability catagory for them.


The egyptian maadis are better built than most variants according to the "lore"

They are also much much harder to find, because of ban's I believe.

So you have a good find there, but I would double check it's legality... as most of them I've read are very finicky regarding 922r I believe.

IF I'm not mistaken the lack of muzzle break or flash hider makes them illegal in the U.S. You will have to get an aftermarket muzzle break or flash hider for it to bring it in line for legality.... I know I read that somewhere in particular about the Maadi variants. It's just how they are manufactured... They are illegal when they get here according to current bans and need to have specific muzzle breaks / flash hiders to make them legal. Again assuming I'm not mistaken in my information.

Not much but that's about all I really know about them.

A lot of "Purists" consider them to be among the best stamp'd receiver AK's if these "Pursits" were to endorse any at all.

Ok... wow. So should I be talking to the gun shop about this? I bought this on consignment from them. I guess I need to research this law more. If it helps, I am in VA which is pretty open with gun laws. IS there going to be problems with me putting a 30 round mag in it too? A 5 round AK is no AK at all

Does the price seem like a good deal? Any idea of what its actually worth?

You want the trigger group, piston, pistol grip, muzzle device and maybe magazines to be US made (I think you need 6 US made parts, the trigger group counts as three parts). Now if this rifle was imported before the 922r law then maybe it can be grandfathered in but I don't know for sure.

I'd have to double check my info, but I believe no maadi comes with a threaded barrel... They have to be specially machined to utilize a flash hider and such... Again don't quote me I seem to remember something about the lack of barrel threading in particular but I could be wrong.

Anyway, it's a great looking rifle, navysully, and I think a steal for $500. Thanks for sharing the pics and info!
