Im in the baby stages of building a bolt rifle, and i think i want this caliber. What do yall think about it?
    pros?
    cons?

I've done a lot of reading on it and I like what I read. From what i understand it has less recoil than a .308, but it has a simular BC to that of .300 win mag.

    any info is needed lol
    pics are cool too!!

If you want info on my rifle plans just ask.

    Thanks.

Ever since I started my AR build I've had the build bug. I figured that a bolt rifle would be perfect. Ill carefully build this gun over the next year.

6.5mm bullets all have excellent BCs.

I have never heard of the 6.5x47mm Lapua, but like you, I am also wanting to build a custom 6.5mm bolt action. Mine will be a 6.5x55mm Swede though. :D

6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5-284, and 6.5-06 are also great calibers.

You reload your own ammo right? If not, you might want to start. ;)

What exactly do you plan on using the rifle for? Hunting? 1000 yard shots? 100-500 yard shots?

    kryptar,

I do not have a 6.5X47 Lapua. But I am sold on my 6.5 Grendel AR as pictured. And some competitors have used the 6.5 Grendel cal. at 1000 Yards because of it's excellent BC. I have shot prairie dogs with mine at 500+ and also deer hunted with it. So I could only assume the 6.5 X47 Lapua is a fine round. I use 6.5 Lapua Brass and Hornady Brass, Hornady 95 gr V-Max for varmints and pigs and 123 gr A-Max for deer. I have also been advised that some of the guys are making 6.5 Grendel out of 7.62X39 casings. The 6.5s are inherently very accurate. Good luck on your project.

Oh I completely understand on that! I'd love to either build another AR after i finished my PSA or a new bolt action such as a Ruger Gunsite Scout in a 6.5 creedmoor but funds don't allow it right now. Best of luck though!

    Ohh yea, I reload. Lol

I'm wanting it for a 300-800 yard target and hunting rifle. Probably wont hunt past 400 yards. I also picked a 6.5 for the awesome BC. The .260 is similar, but I want a caliber that isn't seen often.

The 6.5x47 Lapua can use the same action, mags, and bolt as a .308 (or so I've read) so that's a bonus for finding parts.

What action are you planing on using? Who are you gonna get your barrel from?

The performance between the 260 Remington,6.5 Creedmoor, and the 6.5x47 Lapua are so close, they might as well be the same cartridge.
I have a 260 Remington in an AR 10 platform weapon, and built a custom bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor. Both are excellent shooting, low recoil calibers that brass can be formed from several calibers, and they are easy to reload for.

If your wanting a 6.5x47 Lapua,go for it,you will love the way anything shooting a 6.5mm bullet shoots.

The receiver is most likely going to be a Mauser action. Maybe an action like a Howa, Remington, or Winchester if I can find one for the right price.

I may get the barrel from Brownells (they have some already made for Mauser actions in the caliber I want), or possibly a Kreiger.

I'm still in the planning phase of the build.

I'm still planning too. I've decided to go with a Weatherby action tho. Not sure who ill get my barrel from...

I do plan on going down to Choate Machine and Tool and having them build me the stock I want. I know the head gunsmith personally (grew up with his son) and he still owes me a favor. Lol

Gonna do the trigger work myself.

Question. Are you (y'all) going to the 6.5's (Grendel, Lapua, etc)for the shorter cartridge that will work in the AR platform? Question 2: If you have a strong bolt action, couldn't you load a 6.5 Swede cartridge to do everything these hybrids will do with a lot less work forming your brass etc?

I am going to do a 6.5 AR build, but right now I'm working on the bolt gun. I chose the 6.5x47mm for all that it brings to the table, plus I like that one doesn't see it often.
