Does anyone have first hand knowledge of issues with the S&W M&P 15-22?

Have there been any design changes to the gun, since it was first introduced?

The reason I ask is because a gentleman has offered to sell me what he refers to as an "early" model. Every time he says "early model" I get this image of a red flag in my brain.

    Thanks!

From what I know the early model had a bad spring in it. The new models come with a blue spring which fixed the jamming issue. The old spring was red. S&W will replace it if you send it to them.

The spring thing is about it.

I need to clean mine about every 2500 rounds as thats about when fails in feed extract firing start.

    Superb 22lr rifles.

There was an issue in the early models with a misadjusted extractor that caused FTE's. My brother in law's 15-22 had this issue. S&W fixed it promptly.

As for mine, the only thing I've noticed is they tend not to like the cheap Federal and Remington ammunition.

Actually, I believe that the real difference between the "early" model 15-22's and the current production guns is the older guns don't have a flash hider while the new guns do. I got mine several years ago just after the 12-22 was introduced and even after 2,000 rounds, I have never had an issue. There may be a few other minor differences but I don't know of anyone with the solid barrel design (no flash hider) who's had any problems with the gun. Also, there are now several different options available in the the 15-22 line while the original model was one style/size/color fit's all.

I recently purchase one and it now has about 800-900 rounds through it. Broke it in with MiniMags - 300rds. Now I feed it Federal bulk pack from WalMart and it eats them like candy. It does not particularly like the Remington golden bullets but no problems with Federal. I clean it after evey session and keep it well lubed with Mobil One synthetic. It runs like a champ and it is so much fun it is almost indecent. My local LGS quit selling the other 22s except for Ruger and the S&W.
