I'm getting a Bambi gun but I'm stuck on which caliber to get. I'm not a rifle kinda guy so I'm not too familiar with very many. Which of the three would you vote for?

For a dedicated deer rig the .308 in a nice light bolt action like a Tikka T3 Lite or a Remington Model 7 is hard to beat. BUt for deer I actually prefer the 7mm-08.

You did not list the most popular deer cartridge in the US, the 30-30.

I'd love to get a .30-30 but its range is kinda limited.

Personally i would go 30-06 out of those choices. Its got the widest cartridge choices and can be found anywhere if you dont reload.

308 win. Short action; ammo available everywhere, has held more marksman records for longer periods than any.Can kill as dead as any of the above 3

Another vote for the .06. Although any one of the 3 would do good for deer.

As others have said all three are good choices for deer hunting,I also really like the 7mm-08 as mentioned earlier.
I voted 7mm rem mag that's what I shoot the most,I hunt some very big crop fields where I hunt and the flatter 7mm rem mag and "extra umph" at the end of those long shoots really anchor those big Missouri bucks just works good for my hunting application. There's also a price for the "extra umph" which is more recoil and higher cost of ammo.

I would look at the 308 or 7mm-08 these two have more than enough "umph" for deer hunting with less recoil than your other two choices jmo

I see a lot of votes for .308. I bet those Somalis would vote for it as well, they don't win against the M240 :D

Are there certain brands or models I should avoid getting if I want to use surplus 7.62x51mm?

I voted 308,but like others have said, the 7mm-08 or the 25/06. Both are whitetail killers!

I like all three calibers and have hunted with all three of them. I did vote for the 7 MM Rem Mag. The reason I like it is I hunt in Texas most of the time in the flatland. Anything from 100 to 300 yards, all I have to do is aim where I want it to go and the drop is insignificant. It shoots very flat. Although in at 100 or less tears up a little more meat than I like sometimes and have to place the shot accordingly.

I like the 30.06 but the 308 is a great gun. I think the 7 mag is over kill in Pa.

I agree with this. If I could just have one hunting rifle it would be an 06

55gr exelerators for varmints all the way to 220gr round nose for moose and bear

30-06, powerful and easily available even in Kalif.

There are so many great deer cartridges, I wouldn't get too wrapped up in it. Pick a rifle you love, that fits you well and if it's cheers in anything between the .243 and .45-70, you'll be fine. Personally, I'm partial to the 7mm-08 (mine is a Browning micro hunter). I think my next deer rifle will probably something in 6.5 x 55 mm.

Personal preference, the .308 for bigger surprises other than a Bambi and it is an all around performance caliber. The .06 would work just as well, both are very popular, readily available ammo calibers.

I picked the 308 because it has a low recoil then the 06 .

I did not vote. All 3 will work fine. I use 6.5x55, 9.3x57, or 8x57, Maybe 7.5x55. Be careful w/ 7mmRM. If you use the wrong bullet, it is not pretty at under 100 yards

I think all 3 are great calibers. I voted for 7mm Mag because I've had the best luck as far as accuracy for all applications.

I think the biggest thing to remember when taking in everybodies opinion is the specific application. Myself, I shoot long range muley's in WY, deer on the run from 100-300yds in ND, and sit in pole stands shooting deer. If I was sitting in a tree and shooting no more than 200yds, I'd shoot at 243 or 22-250. Long range, 7mm. Just personal preference I guess.
