can/is it adviable to shoot shotshell rounds from a pistol?
    Have a colt 1911 22.

Or would i be better off just using the rifle?

    Thanks

Im pretty sure they still make "snake shot" or "rat shot" in 22. The only thing I've ever heard to avoid, is shooting it out of compensated barrels. Anything with hole or slots.

You can safely shoot shot in rifles or handguns. In my opinion the stuff is about worthless but that is only my opinion.

EFFECTIVE range is about 5-7 yards against snakes. I do some .38 Special handloads using the empty plastic shot capsules from Speer, and load w/ #6 birdshot- extends the range just a little. Rifling imparts spin to shot capsule, and at any range your shot pattern looks like a doughnut. Used to cut down 30-06 brass and make shot loads for a .45 ACP. Use a gas check for the over powder and over shot wad, cut case to the OAL for a .45 ACP.

Should do the trick at under 10 yards.

Glad to see Ireland hasn't gone as crazy as England with the anti-gun laws!
Or have they as part of the UK?

Ireland is not part of britain, they did annex six counties in the north east 90 years ago after the war of independence.

Not sure how things are with the gun laws in England, but they've made it a major pain in the ass in Ireland to own and shoot a gun. a lot of hoops had to be jumped through for them to even look at my application for a .22 pistol. and that was with a sympathetic police officer looking at my application.
But at least I have it!!:)

Thefonze- have you looked at the shot size on those 22 shot cartridges? Most are #12 shot. The next smaller size is DUST. Not for pigeons unless they are in powder burn range.

There WAS a SMOOTHBORE .22 made by Mossberg years ago, known as the Targo. Had a minature clay pigeon launcher on the barrel- tossed a target about an inch and a half diameter. Looked like this:

There was also a .20 CALIBER rimfire shotgun known as the Wingo. Indoor skeet shooting. Yep, indoor.

Honestly .22 lr shot is only useful at 10 feet for snakes, and absolute worthless for rats, doesnt penetrate, ive tried it on rats at 3 feet, some of the pellets bounced back and lightly tapped my face. Barely even felt it.

Shot a chipmunk at 20 feet, he gave me the finger as he ran away. Worthless imo.

You must be within spiting distance. Save the ammo and hit them with the barrel. Like I said in my post at the top "worthless".
