Just saw this video on you tube of a male playing golf and he hit a deer with the ball. Now I have played golf where a lot wildlife was present and I almost hit one unintentionally, but the guy recording it said "I want to see if he can hit it."

Would this be animal cruelty? What do you think?

Didn't look like any real harm to the animal to me, and it might help keep the deer off the course, saving course damage and human-deer familiarization that could get the deer killed.

I will say though, that the one with the patrolman picking the freaked-out deer up and carrying it off the road was more fun to watch.

Cruel? Sure, a little bit. Really no worse that throwing a rock, which is something you could do to drive them off. Really, I think if the deer was being a nuisance, that's probably what should have been done, throw the ball instead of hitting it with the club. Personally I like that kind of scenery when I'm out and about.

I wouldn't really call it animal cruelty, because as you can tell, it didn't really even bother the deer that much.

And something I read somewhere, deer kill more people in the U.S. than any other wild animal combined. That statistic is a bit skewed (if it's even true, IDK if it is or not), because that also accounts for vehicle accidents caused by deer.

Cruel in the amount of injury ? No, not really, cruel because it was stupid, thoughtless and unnecessary ...absolutely!

What does that sort of message does it send to the boy ...that anything goes when it comes to animals? Is it still funny when the kid decides to see it he can hit the neighbors dog with a bb gun or arrow?

It's a little mean, but not really cruel. I don't think it even hurt the deer, probably just scared it.

I don't see it as any different than hitting a deer in my garden with the slingshot. The guy wasn't hitting the ball very hard. I say no big deal.

What would be cruel is if that deer got pissed off and went after that guy. Wait, did I say cruel? I meant funny as hell. :D

In the long run, it was probably humane. Deer hanging out around people ultimately seem to lead to the deer's demise, so a little tap to scare this one is probably good. Unfortunately, it looks like the deer was not all that scared based on the short distance it ran.

Loud firecrackers would be more effective, but might upset some other players juuuuuust a bit.

Some of the rednecks around here golf; which means they drink a LOT and attempt to play golf. I knew a guy when i was younger who got a badly broken leg from a drunken redneck in a cart on the course, when pissed about his drive the drunkard accidentally crushed the leg of dude waiting to tee off. Now, if some kid actually had dared to set off a firecracker during that attempt at a drive, maybe the kid would have the perma-limp.

I play disc golf, muuuuuch safer. :D

Not really any worse than me throwing rocks at the cat that sells in my bass boat. now I read a story about a kill shelter that gasses there dogs and cats and one of them lived and was given a biblical name and checked out by a vet then adopted out it was on yahoo news two days ago. And I'm a dog lover I have always had lots of dogs up to 13 at one time. They described how they gas the animals and it really really pisses me off that there are kill shelters still where are the animal rights people on this. I have no problem killing a animal for food or if it is a threat to a person on doing damage to property. But to kill a dog or cat because no one wants it is wrong to me. Where the hell is PETA on this the shelter in my town is a kill shelter and I would like to see this changed in my town and all others I give money to the shelter in hopes that it keeps more dogs from being put down but I don't k ow if it really helps. I just don't see how this is not protested by animal rights activist as I said I hunt and only kill things I will eat ad do not hunt just for sport.

I only want to know one thing. What is the cat selling in your boat? autocorrectors? :)

I agree on the rest of the issue you pointed out.

I agree with Tch2fly. I don't think it was cruel but it was kind of mean. I wouldn't have gone out of my way to try to hit the deer, but sometimes things happen.

Being a golfer (ok, I am a hacker, but I've been making divots for over 30 years), I can honestly say that it is nearly a miracle that he hit the deer. His swing is almost as bad as Charles Barkely's. I would have bet serious money after watching his practice swings and how he had lined up, that he would not have come within 25 yards of the deer.
