I inherited a rifle that has sat for at least 2 decades and want to clean it up and use. It is a Stevens, Savage Arms .30-30 model 325-B. Can you recommend a cartridge that would work well with this gun?

It is virtually impossible to predict which ammo will work well in a given gun. Every gun shows decided preferences for one or two loads while performing poorly with others.

The only way to find out is to purchase several boxes from different makers in various bullet weights and shoot them to find out what your gun likes. It is an expensive proposition but I know of no alternative.

Even two guns with the same make and model will show different likes and dislikes.

Buy a box of Winchester, a box of federal and a Box of Remington 150 gr SP's and take them to the range. To be perfectly fair, clean the barrel between each brand to remove all variables.

Robo's on point again with that advice. No one is going to be able to tell you what will shoot well in your gun, they all have inherient traits and preferences.

Buy a few different types and make a trip to the range to see what she likes, then tear the box top off and keep it in your gun sleeve so you don't forget. :D

Don't listen to them go and buy the most expensive stuff you can find and it will shoot the best.

Please don't do this because that is not always the case.

Do you reload? If you do, then you can reload spitzer bullets in the detachable magazine, whereas tubular magazines cannot use them except for the new Hornady Leverrvolution ammo.

    Stevens 30-30

S.Bear is right on about the reloading end of this topic. My only trouble with rechargeing the 30-30 case is the brass is weak/thin on the shoulder, and will crimp down on bullet seating,at times. Also just a little too much case lube and you will leave dents in the shoulder. Good luck.

The only way you'll know which commercial ammo shoots best is to try it. Every gun is different. Even two different guns with same manufacturer, and same model may like different ammo.

Let us know if you reload. I reload for 30-30 and can give some pointers.
    Congratulations on the new rifle!
