When I bought my XD 9 the other day a box of ammo was included. They gave me 9mm Luger 115 gr. I have looked through the owners manual and I might be missing but I can not find what the recommendation is. I am fairly new to this and get a little confused with all the different options and seemingly different sizes of a 9mm round. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you looking for what grain to use for carry? Or are you looking for what 9mm round?
You have an XD in 9mm, which is the the 9x19, or the 9mm Parabellum if you prefer.
As for a good self defense round, I prefer the 124gr or the 135gr personally.
My girl carries the 135gr in her 1911 and I am perfectly comfortable with that.

As JD said, 9x19 MM, 9MM NATO, 9MM Luger, 9MM Parabellum are all one in the same round.
As far as the 115 grain, 124 grain, 147 grain etc., those are just the weights of the actual projectile, diameter is still 9mm or .355". Some weights and bullets types are better suited to a particular application, but any cartridge marked with any of the above designations, regardless of bullet weight, is suitable for use in your XD.

I've shot a couple of mags of 147 gr +P through my XD 9 just to make sure it wasn't going to get squirrely. Add that to the approximately 2k rounds of 115 over the past few months, and I've yet to have an issue of any sort.
I wasn't able to find any SA testing data, but that stuff is proprietary by nature and not what one would expect to have find on the interweb. I chose the +P for carry because I figure that 147 gr is pretty heavy for 9mm, and the added heat would improve expansion in the hollow points.
As for actual test data from the XD 9 platform, let me know if you find it.

Get a few boxes of different rounds and try them out.
The first boxes for my CZ75 (9mm Parabellum) I bought were MagTech 115grain, that ran very nicely with a lighter recoil.
Now I have S&B 124 grain ones and they run very well aswell, but the recoil is a bit harder.
It can happen, that a pistol will not work correctly with specific ammunition, denpending on how high the powederload is.
It has happend for instance on a CZ97, I read in a german forum, that the slide will not go back far enough to load the next round into the chamber.
But the nly way you will find out what ammo runs best with your firearm will be by trying.

I prefer the Gold Dot 124+p's for the 9. Enough velocity to expand reliably, enough weight to penetrate properly, its a good compromise.
Allegedly the Winchester 127+p+ hits like lightning. I am sold on the Gold Dot bullet though. Proper expansion every time and guaranteed 100% weight retention.
