Hey guy I'm going to try to build my own receiver for an ak. What would be the best thickness of metal I should use?

You are about to walk through some dangerous territory. I don't believe you need a FFL to make a gun for YOURSELF, but if the BATFE even thinks you are planning on selling it, or doing anything illegal with it, you could end up serving a very long sentence in Federal prison. I think they may also limit how many you can make per year (limited to one???). You are also going to need some very good machining skills, and some very precise equipment.
I recommend buying an 80% reciever if you really want to build one yourself. It will be much easier to finish, and will probably save you money.

Then you want the same gauge metal as a standard AKM so that normal parts will fit. If making a krinkov style it will still need to be registered as an SBR with the tax stamp paid, unless you build it as a pistol with no provision for stock.

1mm is the thickness if the steel used in Warsaw Pact AKMs. The Chinese use 1.5 mm sheet steel.

There was a thread on some forum about a guy building an AK type rifle out of a shovel. He even used the handle for the buttstock.

If I build the receiver myself I dont have to have a tax stamp or the form4 as long as I don't put stock on it I know the laws but thanks for the info I'm thinking of using 1.5mm its a lil over kill but it's what I am looking for.. Thanks guys

RPKs use 1.5mm thick stamped steel receivers, and are the most durable. Some Chinese and Yugoslavian rifles also use these receivers.

It wasn't meant as an insult to you personally. I have met LEOs who don't know ATF rules and laws. I just like to err on the side of sharing too much info and keeping folks out of trouble.
