I just went back to work last week and trying figure out how to stay a least a little a head of Barry .moneys short but what do you all suggest ,all I have right now is an old inexpensive black powder revolver but obviously I'd like more, may be 2 or 300.00 .

Let's start with caliber. The least expensive caliber to shoot is 22 long rifle. Everyone needs a 22, however, they are not the best if concerned about self defense.

If you want a caliber that is suitable for self defense, then the least expensive options will be the 9mm and .38. 9mm is typically semi-auto and .38 is typically revolver.

What's the purpose you are looking for?

    I agree.

I think 38 spc is a caliber that is one of the less expensive ones and also still available even when there is a run on ammo.
    It is also widely reloaded.

And while not as powerful as the .357 Mag cartridge that is derived from it , it is still fully suitable as a man stopper.

Many inexpensive and yet reliable revolvers can shoot it.

If I was on an extreme budget I'd look into a taurus revolver chambered for .357 Mag.

this way you can shoot both 38 spc and when u want more oopmh and are willing to spend extra money on ammo you cna use .357 Magnum.

Sometimes you can also find quality used american revolver for 350 or so.

One of my pieces is a ruger security six, I got for 340 bucks used.

Is the black powder a .44cal? Fire that hoss off in some intruders direction and you'd probably scare them to death if nothing else.

Seriously though, 9mm is a good caliber, though currently ammo for 9's is a bit difficult and more expensive than usual. .357 has a loud bark and does some good damage, and can be had more often with less difficulty to find, and with the right gun you can shoot .38's out of it.

Cheap but reliable brings the Ruger P95 to mind as well as the lil Bersa Thunder if you need something smaller.
Of course, a good pump shotgun would do the job well if the job is home defense, Maverick's are inexpensive as are Mossbergs.

The last few months I have been buying police trade ins, both semi and revolvers, in 38, 357, 9, and 40. the revolvers start at about $260 and the autos about $350.
They are not good looking guns but they shoot very well!!
    Most are S&W 64, 65, 5906, and 4006's, and some Glock 19 and 22's.

    Alabama? Sure.

    Illinois? Nope.
Used prices are very close to new right now.
Used guns are gone or priced very high.

I have been buying them primarily from SOG. I am a dealer.
