I think JD said it best. You should consider a handgun for home protection. Seriously do a practice sweep of your house, once with a broom handle or something that is about 30" long, then do the same with a toy gun or something resembling a handgun.
Long guns typically have ammo that is fast and light, and handguns have ammo that is slow and heavy. Double taps are also much easier with a handgun.
These tests should give you plenty of convincing info if your still stubborn about a long rifle for home defense.
