What about a SIG P226, since you're used to them?
advice on a new handgun, trading mine
Hi folks, I'm looking to trade my Sig P245 for something a little more practical. I love my sig, don't get me wrong, but I'd like something that has more capability as far as magazine capacity, accessory compatability, etc. And reccommendations? I'd like to go to perhaps a 9mm or .40, and I like glock, hk, ruger, etc. I don't by any means need the newest or hottest item, especially since I'm wanting to trade my sig with no out of pocket on my end. So, let me know what you think! Thanks!

Look at the XD line from Springfield; i have been very happy with my XD45, as has a buddy with his XD9.
the P226 would be great, I don't know how achievable my goal to not spend any money would be though. That xd9 looks like a good option. What else? And I like 9mm, but how would that compare, in your opinion, to something in the .40 range?
I also have an opportunity for a p228, would that be a good go you think?
Last year i sold my Sig P220 outright and bought a brand new Springfield XDm bi tone 45 4.5". I could not be happier 13rd mags instead of 7rds and i shoot it more accurately to boot. I do not regret the change one bit. Rail if i want it aftermarket and factory support options abound what's not to be happy with?
I think its much harder now then ten years ago to pick a bad one... sticking with most of the major players anyway. I personally have a ruger sr9 and love it but I also enjoy shooting my best friends xd45 and another buddy has a couple Glocks.... ruger... smith... Springfield... FN...handle a bunch and do some reading... you'll find one that just fits...
I love my Ruger P95. I have carried revolvers all my life. The P95 handles very much like a revolver. Right after I bought the P95 I inherited a charter 357 mag with a 2" barrel. I prefer the 357 for EDC. I don't like the idea of betting my life on a weapon that experts say you should get in the habit of double tapping. But the P95 is a lot of fun on the range.
Other than ballistics would be price. If I'm not mistaken .40S&W cost more than 9mm. Another factor to consider would be an interchangeable barrel. You could buy a .40S&W and get a 9mm. You could have yourself two firearms.And I like 9mm, but how would that compare, in your opinion, to something in the .40 range?
It's hard to beat a Glock 19 for price/value. The S&W M&P is a great American-made gun with the same practical features found in Glocks.
This is what I look for in a practical carry pistol:
- Reliability
- Ergonomic design
- No external safety to mess with or snag on clothing
- Striker fired
- Usable sights
- Affordable ammunition, magazines, and accessories
If you're partial to SIG's or HK's there a tariff attached to those options. They're nice pistols, but the Glock and M&P do the job at a lower price point.

I am partial to my EDC XD40 SC followed by my S&W M&P 40 Compact. Both have been flawless.

Another reason I acquired a 9mm is ammo is cheap. Recoil is not an issue. The 9mm is just as easy to shoot as a 22LR. I am not to keen on the 40 cal. If I am going to pay high prices for ammo I want magnum power. I would get a 10mm before a 40cal. You might consider a 9mm for a range gun and keep carrying your sig.
