Decided to see how my reloads stacked up to various Milsurp.

    Test Rifle M39 Mosin Nagant
    Range 50 yard, iron sights
    Wind, negligible

    First up, Russian Light Ball

    Next, Bulgarian Heavy ball

    Next Czech Light Ball

Finally my home loads using 49 gr. of H4895, 147 gr. FMKBT's

I'd say you should hand load all your target rounds and just plunk away with the milsup!

Thanks for a great report gandog.

All kidding aside it looks like the handloads are working out nicely for ya. Well done! Looks like grouping better than half the size of your best surplus load.
Any pics of the rifle?? We like gun Pr0n:D

    Home loading

Big difference there GD but then again you expected that didn't you ? I don't know anyone who loads there own ammo who hasn't seen a big improvement over factory rounds.

I have just finished buying all the reloading equipment needed and I will start in a few weeks loading 6.5x55 for my Sako.

I'd say the size of the grouping on the Russian light ball isn't too far off your hand loads - just needs some scope adjustment to put it on target-centre. If it's really cheap might be the best choice for plinking.

Before I compliment you on your shooting with iron sights, what size are the rings on the targets?

That's exactly what I do. Fire away with cheap milsurp and fire the reloads for accuracy checks.

Nah, I like firing the reloads so I don't have to clean out them nasty corrosive salts the primers in the milsurp leave..............BUT if I am going to general plink I still use the milsurp.
